SUMMARYIndiana could use several improvements to its interstate system. There are some that are being considered such as I-69 south of Indy, and an upgrade to US-31 to the north. Below are a few of the improvements that would benefit indiana's statewide traffic needs INTERSTATE 67Indiana is currently planning on upgrading US-31 north of Indianapolis over the next 25 years. It will be upgraded as a freeway for its entire length. Designating this route as Interstate 67 would fit logically into the interstate highway numbering system. The highway would follow US-31 north from Indy through South Bend and up into Michigan. INTERSTATE 69Interstate 69 has long been planned and now it is closer to becoming a reality. Eventually coursing its way to the Texas/Mexico border. This interstate will be an important international trade corridor. It will be extended south from Indianapolis through Bloomington and Evansville. A new bridge is being proposed across the Ohio river to connect it to Kentucky's proposed Interstate 69. Exit numbers and mileposting will need to be adjusted along the current I-69 to reflect the new terminous at the Kentucky state line. INTERSTATE 69Interstate 76 is an extension of the intestate westward from where it ends in Ohio thet crosses through north central indiana, and eventually connects to Interstate 80 far west of Chicago. This interstate routing should be built as a toll-free highway, but could be tolled if necessary. This highway would provide another interstate quality route across the country and through indiana's crossroads, providing a vital link for transportation and relief cor congested areas like Cleveland and Chicago. |
