ULTIMATE SAN DIEGO INTERSTATES

Here are some ideas to make improvements to the interstate system for San Diego. Below is a map with ideas proposed for future interstate routes.

San Diego's improvements to its interstate system include redesignation of several freeways as interstate routes throughout the area.

A major link in the western interstate system is Interstate 15 which currently ends at the I-8 interchange in mission valley. several years ago State Route 15 was converted to freeway along 40th street closing a major gap in the freeway system. This secton of freeway south of Mission Valley to I-5 remains signed as SR-15 but should be signed as I-15 now that the freeway gap is eliminated.

Interstate 408 would be the soledad freeway, currently signed as State Route 52. This route heads east from I-5 to SR 125 in Santee. SR-52 is being extended east to SR 67, Thus I-408 would continue east on that new section then turn southward on SR-67 to meet I-8 in El Cajon.

Interstate 508 would be the South Bay freeway, Currently signed as SR 54. Thius route heads east from I-5 in National City the route then turns northward and changes to SR 125 and ends at the ML King Jr Freeway (I-808 or SR 94) in La Mesa and Lemon Grove.

Interstate 808 would be the Martin Luther King Jr Freeway, currently signed as SR 94. This route heads east from I-5 in downtown San Diego to SR-125 in La Mesa turning north it becomes SR 125. Interstate 808 crosses over I-8 in La Mesa and heads north ending at I-408 (SR 52) in Santee.

Interstate 905 will replace existing State Route 905 once the freeway portion east of I-805 to the Otay Mesa border crossing is complete. I-905 begins at I-5 north of San Ysidro and heads east across Otay Mesa and connects to the new SR 125 toll road (I-908)

Interstate 908 would be the new route designation for the SR 125 Toll road. The road begins in the south at I-905 (currently SR 905) and heads north thru the eastern hills in Chula Vista and meets I-508 (SR 54) near the Sweetwater River. This entire portion would remain as a toll road. Tolls may never be removed from this section of roadway.
