ACCELERATE 465 FREEWAY UPGRADE
This project is a complete overhaul of the west side of I-465 from 56th street south to Kentucky Ave. Much of this project north of I-74 is complete and several other sections are near completion as well. But some of the toughest and more inconvenincing work is now underway, specifically the I-70 and I-74 interchanges. Once complete however, will be two of the most convenient and efficient interchanges in the whole I-465 loop system. This project even in it's partially completed state has greatly improved the west side. Once the entire project is complete I-465 will have additional lanes in each direction to safely shutle traffic through the area.
I-465/I-74 INTERCHANGE AND WIDENING
This section will completely redisign the ramp configuration to allow high efficiency flyover ramps to connect to I-74 and will completely reroute US-136 to a separate interchange as detailed below. I-74 will no longer connect to Crawfordsville Rd directly. this new configuration will dramatically increase safety.
NEW I-465/US-136 INTERCHANGE AND WIDENING
This interchange will be a new interchange located just south of the I-74 interchange. traffic will connect to Crawfordsville and US-136 at this interchange. this will support route continuity and increase safety as well.
I-465/US 40 and 10th STREEET INTERCHANGES AND WIDENING
This project will completely remove and reconstruct the 10th Street and Washington Street/US-40 intersections. It will also add travel lanes to I-465. This will improve safety and traffic flow for the area.
I-465/I-70 and SAM JONES EXPY INTERCHANGES AND WIDENING
This project will completely reconstruct the I-70 and Sam Jones Expressway interchanges and add additional lanes through this section to Kentucky Ave.
VISION FOR I-465 (Westside)
This project still leaves a couple of sections of I-465 unimproved. The first section from 91st Street and I-856 to West of North Meridian Street, and the other on the south from SR-67 (Kentucky Ave) and I-65. these are also areas that need improvement, particulary on the north side and the I-865 interchange. This will hopefully be addressed in a future project.
Speed Limits: 55mph is largely ignored on the loop. many people fly by at nearly 20 mph over the posted speed with little fear of being caught. Speed limits are set very low and should be increased, especially in the light of these recent improvements. 65Mph is a reasonable and safe speed for this freeway. Additionally Enforcement of speeds along this freeway can be done by video and photo enforcement.
