US 20/26 FRANKLIN RD INTERCHANGE PROJECT
INTERCHANGE UPGRADE
The purpose of this project is to widen the interchange by constructing a new overpass to allow 4 thru lanes and 2 left turn lanes each way for traffic entering the freeway. Upgrades also include improvements to the diagonal ramps in each quadrant of the interchange and the bridge approaches on the east and west side of the freeway. The bridge rebuild will also allow the potential future widening of interstate 84 through Caldwell.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
The interchange at Franklin Road US20/26 in Caldwell Exit 29 has been very congested for years especially since so many trucks travel through the intersections each day to get to the travel stops located on either side of the interstate. Additionally there is an increasing amount of traffic volume being added as a result of growth caused by development near the interchange.
WHAT WILL IT DO TO HELP
Once completed the new interchange will allow traffic to flow more smoothly with shorter wait times at signals. Also with increased safety measures and newly redesigned ramps and bridge approach, there should be less chance of collisions happening at this intersection. And with new traffic signals installed at the freeway ramps and also at the Aviation Way intersection to the east, traffic movemtents will be much safer as well.
VISION FOR EXIT 29
The new intersection paves the way for some key improvements. One of those is the eventual widening of interstate 84. Through Caldwell needs I-84 to be widened to 6 lanes through the city, to allow for future increased traffic volume to prepare for the possibility of a major development northwest of Caldwell.
Another improvement that this will allow is the widening of US 20/26 from Caldwell to Eagle Road in Meridian. This widening project needs to be completed to make the corridor more safe by constructing turn lanes and widening the highway to 4 lanes with a central median or continuous left turn lane.
PROJECT UPDATE
The major construction phase of this project was completed in July of 2008 when the northern side of the overpass was opened to traffic. Some landscaping work continued on into August of 2008.
