I-80 WEST PLACER COUNTY CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENT PLAN

SUMMARY

This project is schedule to be completed through a series of projects along the corridor through the year 2035. The Corridor limits along Interstate 80 are from Roseville to Colfax, to the Eagle Road Interchange. The original highway constructed in 1968 has had few major improvements since it was constructed. the pavement is now deteriorated and extremely rough in many locations along the corridor. Some sections of the freeway cannot handle the current volume of traffic that it must now carry. Also this section of freeway is the scene of frequent accidents and traffic delays. Below are a list of projects that intend to correct the substandard conditions of the current roadway.

THINKING FORWARD

The purpose of this project is to widen Interstate 80 from Roseville to Rocklin, and to rebuild the interchanges at SR-65, Rocklin Rd, Sierra College Blvd, Loomis and Colfax/SR-174. The projects also include some operational improvements to the freeway as well.

PROJECT DETAILS

ACROSS THE TOP BUS/CARPOOL LANE PROJECT

Construct HOV lanes in the median of Interstate 80, in both directions. Construct auxiliary lanes in both directions West El Camino to Interstate 5 interchange and Northgate to Norwood. (Source: CalTrans)

ROSEVILLE WIDENING AND OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS

A 5.8 mile section of Interstate 80 (I-80) in Sacramento and Placer Counties is to be widened by adding an HOV (Carpool) lane in each direction to the interstate from the county line to just east of SR-65. This project is intended to freeway capacity, improve safety, and improve traffic flow east of the Sacramento/Placer county line past the State Route 65 connector. Other improvements include the addition of auxiliary lanes, installation of ramp meters, upgrading the traffic monitoring system, and upgradinging the interchanges at Riverside/Auburn, Douglas, Atlantic/Eureka, Taylor and state route 65.

The project will be constructed in four phases:

SIERRA COLLEGE BLVD INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Constructed a new interchange as a modified partial cloverleaf design. Replaced bridge with new wider bridge for five lanes of traffic. Westbound on-ramp have ramp metering signals installed. designated HOV lanes have been added to onramps. Project is complete. (Source: FixPlacerTraffic.org)

INTERSTATE 5 and 80 INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS

Reconstruct existing interchange to add a flyover ramp from Eastbound I-80 to Northbound I-5 and a HOV (Carpool) Flyover ramp from Westbound I-80 to Southbound I-5 (And from Northbound I-50 to Eastound I-80) to allow for future planned carpool lanes in the "across the top" project of I-80. Included in this project are lane reconfigurations at neighboring interchanges (Garden Highway, West El Camino [I-5 and I-80], Truxel Road, and Arena Blvd). (Source: CalTrans)

PROJECT BACKGROUND

This freeway route is vital to the nations interstate infrastructure and important for Califoria transportation needs as well. Several sections of interstate 80 are in need of serious attention throughout the state. Aging and Deteriorating pavement has out-lived it's service life; bottlenecks and congestion plague many sections of the interstate; older interchanges are poorly designed and create safety concerns and need to be reconstructed; just to name a few. These projects are vital to increasing the traffic volume, and rebuilding parts of the interstate highway that are no longer able to adequately serve drivers safely.

VISION FOR INTERSTATE 80

This freeway needs to be widened to 8 lanes minimum throughout the sacramento region from Davis to Auburn. as more people are moving out to farther regions of the valley and foothills the interstate is being more heavily relied upon to get people where they need to go on time. Key Improvements that need to be made are:
