STATE ROUTE 49 NORTH AUBURN IMPROVEMENTSA NEW ROUTEThe purpose of this project is to manage traffic flow along the highway by widening, and removing local traffic from the roadway by providing a local road circulation network to reduce congestion along the corridor. PROJECT STATS
PROJECT BACKGROUNDCongestion along Grass Valley Highway nas been a major problem for quite some time. The highway not only serves local traffic and businesses, it also serves commuters and commercial traffic for Sacramento and Grass Valley as well. The highway is simply not designed to handle the massive amounts of traffic to keep traffic moving smoothly. PROJECT DETAILSImprovements are planned to remove local traffic from highway 49 by providing other routes for local traffic circulation. The highway will also be widened to 6 lanes wide in some locations. Some of the local circulation routes have already been constructed. The widening is not expected to occur until 2015-2020. VISIONS FOR THIS PROJECTThe main way that congestion is going to be addressed along Highway 49 is to separate the highway entirely from the local street system. by limiting access to the highway and building grade separations in some areas. While the highway cannot be upgraded to freeway, it can be upgraded to a limited access expressway with fewer traffic signals and less cross traffic. encouraging local drivers to use the local road system is also needed to limit congestion along the highway as well.
