US 395 NORTHBOUND PROJECT

PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of this project is to widen the freeway approach to the Spaghetti Bowl interchange from northbound US 395 by adding new travel and auxiliary lanes to the freeway. This project will help alleviate a traffic bottleneck at this interchange and improve operations of the northbound freeway well into the next decade. The project will remove the major traffic congestion caused by too few lanes, by adding extra lanes from north of Moana Lane to Interstate 80.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Spaghetti Bowl interchange is the backbone of Reno's freeway system, and an ever growing amount of traffic is utilizing this interchange each day. Most of Reno's growth is occurring to the south of Reno along US-395, and as a result the volume of traffic travels northbound along the highway each day is expected to grow over the next 30 years, as people travel to jobs located downtown and elsewhere in the valley.

US 395 in its current configuration was once adequate to meet the traffic needs for the valley, but now due to these increases in traffic volume, it is the sight of frequent periods of congestion, and is no longer able to meet traffic demands with a reasonable level of service (LOS) in its current design. As a result, the US 395 needs to be reconstructed to reduce delays and improve the overall safety and operations of the highway. This project will address these congestion issues by adding freeway, auxiliary and acceleration/deceleration lanes, and by separating the exit ramps to eastbound and westbount I-80 onto separate ramps. Also included in the project is wider bridges, new overhead signage and new lane configurations.

TENTATIVE DETAILS

Adding 1-3 additional auxiliary or travel lanes from Moana ln to Interstate 80

constructing two lane off-ramps at Plumb Lane/Villanova Dr and Glendale Ave

Construct two separate two-lane exit ramps from US 395. the first to eastbound I-80, the second to westbound I-80. The separate ramps will improve operations, and cut down on unsafe lane changes and confusion.

New overhead guide signs to provide clear instructions for navigating the interchange.

new changeable message sign to alert drivers of special road conditions and weather.
